New York to Hold First Female Sports Parade in City's History for U.S. Women's Soccer Team

It’s been over 30 years since New York City held a ticker-tape (confetti) parade for a sports team that competes outside the greater metropolitan area, but in a glorious trend of making history, the U.S. women’s National soccer team will end that hiatus, according to the New York Times.

The team, which won the Women's World Cup against Japan on Sunday, July 5, in the most-watched soccer game in United States history, will be honored on Friday morning, July 10, at the “Canyon of Heroes” in Lower Manhattan, and are the first female sports team to receive a parade in the history of New York.

Players Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach, as well as coach Jill Ellis, are all openly gay and riding a summer of triumph, first with their basic human right to marry fully realized and now with the greatest honor a soccer player can achieve.

“The people have spoken,” Chirlane McCray, the New York City mayor’s wife, wrote on Twitter, “and they want a ticker-tape parade.”
