The new traffic control tower will serve as a beacon and "gateway to the Pacific."

Construction is wrapping on the striking new Airport Traffic Control Tower and Integrated Facilities Building at San Francisco International Airport.

The final beam for the tower will be placed Tuesday, with an evergreen tree and an American Flag added to the top. Designed by Fentress Architects, the tower sits between Terminals 1 and 2 and includes offices for the Federal Aviation Administration and publicly-accessible corridors in its 44,000 square foot base. Fentress declares their tower will be the first image passengers see upon arriving at SFO.

"At night the tower features a backlit vertical band that will not only be visually appealing but also serve as a San Francisco landmark," reads a statement from the architects. See another shot of the tower on the following page.
