Museum Exhibit Looks at Costumes of Downton Abbey

Wilmington, Del.'s Winterarthur Museum, Garden & Library explores how close to reality the costumes of Downton Abbey are.

Downton Abbey super-fans should make their way to Wilmington, Del. on March 1, when the "Costumes of Downton Abbey" exhibit opens at the Winterarthur Museum.

The Winterarthur-curated exhibit include 40 costumes worn by major characters of the period drama — a runaway hit for PBS. Spoiler alert!: Lady Edith's wedding dress (which she wore when her fiancee ditched her at the altar), Lady Sybil's harem pants (that she sported before dying from complications of child birth), and Lady Mary's engagement dress (that she donned not long before her husband was killed) are all on display, as well as costumes by elegant maid Anna, glamorous Earl and Countess of Grantham, stuffy Dowager Countess, and handsome gay butler Thomas (pictured above). Check out some of the clothing to be featured in the exhibit on the following pages.

"Costumes of Downton Abbey" will also highlight clothing and items from the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries to compare how real the Downton world is. Items include Henry Francis du Pont's Savile Row evening jacket, Mrs. du Pont's traveling case, and dozens of accessories and photos. The exhibit runs for all of 2014; click here for more info.
