Meet the New Gay, Republican Mayor of Atlantic City

Don Guardian takes over as leader of the New Jersey resort city, home of both extravagance and poverty.

Governor Chris Christie wasn't the only Republican celebrating on Tuesday in New Jersey: Don Guardian (pictured) partied into the night after his win over Lorenzo Langford, the longtime Democratic mayor of Atlantic City, N.J.

Guardian was embraced for his promises to lower taxes and decrease wasteful spending. Many people, expressing a need for change, told the Press of Atlantic City that they crossed party lines to vote for Guardian. As head of the city's special improvement district, Guardian was tasked by Christie with turning around Atlantic City's fortunes; the two politicians reportedly have a good relationship, while Langford and Christie clashed.

Atlantic City has long struggled with poverty and unemployment since its heyday in the early-20th century, but the opening of the upscale Borgata casino in 2003, popular with LGBT revelers, and the Revel last year are some recent bright spots. Last year's Superstorm Sandy didn't help matters, but damage was not as extensive as initially reported.

On the night of his victory, Guardian told his supporters that "sometimes David beats Goliath." Read more here.
