The London 'Harry Potter' Theater Sequel Has a Cast

Including a black Hermione.

London’s theater scene will never the same after Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Dubbed an official sequel by J.K. Rowling herself, the play picks up where the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows left off – think dad jeans and mom hairdos. To the joy of some and the dismay of others, the play has announced the casting of Jamie Parker as Harry Potter, Paul Thornley as Ron Weasley, and Noma Dumezweni as Hermione Granger.

Though some fans were angered about the casting of a black woman as Hermione, J.K. Rowling tweeted her support of Dumezweni, even pulling the facts about Hermione’s physical features from her own books: “Canon: brown eyes, frizzy hair and very clever. White skin was never specified. Rowling loves black Hermione.” Once J.K. Rowling tweets her approval with a kissy face, that’s the end of it.

The play, which opens next year at London’s Palace Theatre, has already sold out its first round of performances.
