The road trip has been a favorite movie trope since the advent of cinema. However, some of the most genre-defining films on the subject emerged from the 1980s: Cannonball Run (1981), PeeWee’s Big Adventure (1985), Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) and, of course, National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983).
