NYC Wine Bar Offering 'Big Straight Ice Cream'
Funny or obnoxious? New York wine bar Gallo Nero is offering "The Big STRAIGHT ice cream," according to a poster on their window; it appears a direct response to the city's popular dessert truck and chain, Big Gay Ice Cream.
BGIC is operated by gay owners Douglas Quint and Bryan Petroff, who started off their cheeky endeavor as a food truck in 2009, with wacky flavors like the Be Arthur. They opened their first brick-and-mortar in the East Village in 2011, and have continued to expand; their largest store ever is opening soon in Los Angeles.
Gallo Nero, located in the gay village of Hell's Kitchen, was clearly trying to generate some publicity with their "straight ice cream" (isn't all ice cream straight without rainbow sprinkles?). Gothamist asked a Gallo Nero manager about their new marketing effort and got this response:"What's the issue? We can call our ice cream whatever we want."
