Tonight, representatives from legendary organizations ACT UP and Dyke Action Machine! will be discussing the power of language and propaganda in political campaigning and advertising at The 8th Floor. Facilitated by The Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, the conversation will be moderated by Director and Curator Sara Reisman—one part of the programming surrounding the exhibition When Artists Speak Truth..., which runs at the space through March.
Panelists Avram Finkelstein of ACT UP and Carrie Moyer and Sue Schaffner of Dyke Action Machine! have had profound and lasting impacts on the artistic political landscape in recent decades. Finkelstein designed the now iconic Silence = Death poster, and Moyer and Schaffner created pieces for Dyke Action Machine!, which were often used to distance the lesbian community from the gay rights movement's push for hetero-normative aspirations like marriage and parenthood.
Like the exhibition and all associated performances and conversations, tonight's event is free and open to the public, and begins at 6pm. For more information, visit the website.
