2-Minute Cinema: Monét X Change Gets Into Full Drag in Times Square

What started as a social experiment turned into a newfound friendship.

Times Square is not a place that New Yorkers like to frequent. It’s a tourist’s playground where personal space does not exist.

For New York drag queen, Monét X Change, it’s a perfect location to get ready for a show. The performer recently got into full drag on the TKTS steps as part of a social experiment filmed by Cheyenne Picardo.

While passersby snapped photos as they usually do in the presence of a drag queen, only one approached Monét. A woman named Jeannie sat down next to the queen just to make a new friend. The two talked about drag, makeup, and New York in what appeared to be a beautifully organic exchange.

“With racial tension at a boiling point in this country, this beautiful white woman comes over with eyes of love and a heart of compassion to just ‘make a friend,’” Monét posted on Facebook. “And now we are bonded for life!”
