Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants announced this week that the company plans to build a new 190-room hotel in downtown Palm Springs, The Desert Sun reports. The six-story Kimpton hotel, which is scheduled to open in 2015, has been at the center of some controversy because some Palm Springs residents say it’s too tall and may block views of the mountains. The hotel is the cornerstone of a 14-acre redevelopment taking the place of the Desert Fashion Plaza, which is currently being torn down.
OutTravelers know that San Francisco-based Kimpton is one of the most gay-friendly hotel chains around—a fact underscored by its Red Ribbon Campaign, which donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to local HIV/AIDS charities. As part of the campaign, guests can “Join the Fight by Staying the Night” by registering at the Red Ribbon site. In exchange, Kimpton will give you a 15 percent discount and donate $10 per night to an HIV/AIDS charity.
