Global Music & Art Collide in 13,000 Square Foot Brooklyn Warehouse

Global Music & Art Collide in 13,000 Square Foot Brooklyn Warehouse

MATTE's immersive event, BLACK, returns this weekend to New York, bringing together contemporary sound, design and art.

Building a bridge between sound, design and the best of contemporary art, creative agency MATTE will return to New York this Saturday to take over 263 Prospect Avenue for their immersive event, BLACK. The massive 13,000+ square foot warehouse in Sunset Park will be transformed into an interdisciplinary party that's separated into two separate acts—both featuring live performances and curated art installations from PEANA, an exhibition platform centered on Latin American art.

BLACK’s first act will see underground rapper Tommy Genesis take the stage, as well as British grime act Trim. After a visual art intermission, the event’s second act will follow with Irish DJ Max Cooper, British DJ Midland and Berlin-based duo Tale of Us. Meanwhile, PEANA’s recruits, which will be displayed during performances, include Austrian artist Hubert Dobler, Kyle McDonald, Jonas Jongejan, Coco Lab and Paolo Montiel from Mexico City.

McDonald and Jongejan’s “Light Leaks” will project controlled light into the giant Brooklyn space using 50 mirror balls, while Coco Lab will supply their audiovisual installation, “White Lab,” as BLACK’s 30-minute intermission. Dobler’s piece, “ROUNDABOUT2,” will tie together two running motorcycles and have them wildly circle each other to create a “rubber painting” composed of abstract burned rubber marks for guests to view throughout the night. Finally, Montiel’s immersive “Immaru” will feature colored laser lights that create a 118-feet-long tunnel to walk through.

NYC has hosted BLACK’s ambitious collaborative event on three other occassions, each time delivering a dark, subversive celebration of contemporary culture. Previous talent at BLACK includes Gesaffelstein, Twin Shadow and Little Dragon, drawing notable attendees like Adrien Grenier, Emily Ratajkowski, Alexander Wang and Dev Hynes. The party has also been held in Mexico City's abandoned Hotel Reforma.

BLACK will take place this Saturday, April 8 at Brooklyn's 263 Prospect Ave. Tickets can be purchased on BLACK-NYC.com.
