The Gay Agenda: Almodovar's Broadway Debut
The musical adaptation of Pedro Almodovar’s 1988 post-modern comedy Women on The Verge of A Nervous Breakdown opens on Broadway this evening. The film starred a young Carmen Maura (frequent Almodovar muse) and Antonio Banderas. The stage adaptation stars Patti Lupone, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Laura Benanti, and Sherie Rene Scott in an outrageous tale about a cast of characters on the verge of a major histrionic fit set into motion by the sudden departure of a lover. From melodramatic ballads to barbiturate-laden gazpacho, Women on The Verge is one of Almodovar’s most recognizable and acclaimed works and it will be interesting to see how the tour de force of stage talent handles the translation.
