LGBTQ Progress in Ukraine
Ukraine is slowly shedding its homophobic past. People who were previously afraid to publicly embrace their identity for fear of hateful retribution are now organizing and celebrating the LGBTQ+ community. Activists and ordinary citizens are speaking out and organizing into groups like Rizni.Rivni (Diverse.Equal), and allies are making their support known though the use of the movement’s symbols and messaging.
We’ve curated photos from the Ukrainian past and present to show just how far the country and community have evolved over the years, giving hope to the LGBTQ+ community and those who fight for equal rights for all citizens regardless of sexual identity.

RIGHT WING THREATS FROM THE PAST
Pride has not always been welcomed in Ukraine. In 2012, threats of violence from right wing extremists led to calls from Amnesty International to cancel Pride out of concern for the safety of participants. Local organizers agreed and called off the event.
