The TomboyX revolution rolls on.
The popular gender-neutral clothing brand, founded by the queer Seattle duo of Fran Dunaway and Naomi Gonzalez, debuted a summer swimwear line that’s equal parts comfortable, practical, and sexy. Highlighted by numerous blue hues, the suits, tanks, tops, shorts, and unisuits are quick drying and made with stretchable eco-friendly materials that protect the skin with UPF 50. In keeping with TomboyX’s credo, the swim line fits a diverse range of body sizes and many pieces can serve as both swimwear and resort wear, easily worn in the pool and at the brunch table. The vibrant cabana shirts work for any gender and pair well with shrimp cocktail and a mai tai.
The days of gender-neutral folks and butch women squeezing into one-pieces or making-do with oversize T-shirts and unflattering cargo shorts are over. As Dunaway tells Out Traveler, “For too long, people like us have had to try to force our bodies into being comfortable in swimwear that wasn’t made for us. We’re tomboys and we like to run on the beach, surf, play volleyball and build sandcastles! And we don’t have time to make wardrobe adjustments while we’re doing it. I remember putting our unisuit on for the first time. I literally ran around my parent’s pool feeling freer than I’d ever felt in a swimsuit. Then I did a cannonball.”
