Watch: Heartening Video Shows Everyday Spaniards Don't Tolerate Homophobia

When facing bigotry, gay tourists found fierce support in passersby.

A gay couple in Madrid are trying to find their hostel, but without Spanish, they're unable to read the hostel owner's directions. Therefore, they turn to people walking past, many of whom are only too happy to help. The jovial exchanges turn somber, however, when the Spaniards see the violently homophobic message included in the directions. Some don't feel comfortable translating the whole message, some tell them to find another hostel right away, and many tell them to go straight to the police. "Here in Spain, you can't say this," said one man, with a woman adding, "This guy is an animal."

The video was made by Spain’s State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals, as part of a campaign to encourage people to report cases of homophobia and discrimination. Spain, a heavily Catholic country, was one of the first countries to legalize same sex marriage and adoption in 2005. Today, 77% support marriage equality, the largest proportion in the world according to a Buzzfeed-Ipsos poll
