Through the eyes of four adolescent children growing up in Australia, Gayby Baby offers a fresh viewpoint in regard to LGBT parenting. In discussions about same-sex family parenting, the child's perspective is often omitted, and with this documentary, filmmaker Maya Newell hopes to change that.
Newell is a "gayby" herself and found that perspective utterly lacking in mainstream and indie films. Over the course of four years, Newell captured the day-to-day lives of four children who come to terms with themselves and what it means to be raised by LGBT parents.
Gayby Baby will make its New York debut at DOC NYC: The New York Documentary Film Festival. It has previously been shown at film festivals including the Sydney Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival.
Gayby Baby screens Nov. 18 at the IFC Center, NYC. It will open April 2016 in select U.S. theaters. Watch the trailer below:
