Qatar Bans Screenings of The Danish Girl
The Danish Girl, the critically acclaimed film that tells the story of Lili Elbe, the first person to undergo gender confirmation surgery, and stars Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, was set for a theatrical release in Qatar. However, following complaints of "depraved content," Gay Star News reports, the Gulf Arab state has banned all screenings.
Qatar, the wealthy nation of about 2 million, still criminalizes homosexuality. Punishments range from 7 years in prison to the death penalty for Muslims. There are no legal protections for transgender people, and no way to legally get gender identities changed.
