School Near Mike Pence's D.C. Home Removes Rainbow Flag Because It's 'Political'

The Vice President-Elect brings politics wherever he goes.

The residents of Chevy Chase, the swanky D.C. neighborhood where VP-Elect Mike Pence moved before he occupies the Naval Observatory, have been very vocal about how they feel about the Indiana governor's LGBT policies.

Pence's new neighbors have been putting up rainbow flags left and right, and even gave one to Lafayette Elementary School to show solidarity to the community. The school has since taken the flag down, according to Towleroad, because they "wanted to be mindful of wading into political waters."

In a letter to the parents, Principal Carrie Broquard wrote, "Given the current political landscape, our commitment is to remain neutral. In order to avoid any unwanted attention or to have any symbols misinterpreted as a political action, the flag has been removed."

In the same note, however, Broquard assured that Lafayette Elementary will continue to be inclusive of "all students and families of all identities." She wrote, "We at Lafayette pride ourselves on our diversity and our inclusivity, including but not limited to LGBQT families."

Pence's presence in this neighborhood is a polarizing one, but it appears his neighbors will continue to "respectfully protest" his anti-LGBT rhetoric.
