Rio Olympics to Supply Athletes with Massive Amount of Condoms

The summer games will have triple the amount of condoms supplied in London during 2012.

The International Olympic Committee will ship about 450,000 condoms to Rio de Janeiro for the upcoming summer games.

That’s three times as many condoms as the IOC provided for the games in 2012 in London, according to the Associated Press. The total includes 100,000 female condoms for the first time. That’s 42 condoms per athlete.

The Olympic villages have been notorious for hookups among the world’s premier athletes. While reports have speculated the rise in condoms is tied to the Zika virus outbreak, the IOC has denied the virus was part of the decision to increase safe-sex options at this year’s games.

Meanwhile, the team from Down Under isn’t taking any chances. Australian athletes are bringing their own supply of antiviral condoms to the games.

The IOC has been distributing condoms at the games since 1992 to raise awareness of HIV.
