Live Like a Local: Crown Heights, Brooklyn

Reed and Zach Crown Heights

Gay couple, Reed and Zach, gives us their insights into what makes Crown Heights, Brooklyn a must-visit neighborhood.

What do you guys for a living?

We are both producers.  Zach works in digital video and Reed works in events.

How did you guys meet?

We actually met on Scruff!  We were chatting for a while and after about a year of that we finally met up for drinks.

Tell us where you live.

We live in Crown Heights, which is a neighborhood in central Brooklyn located between Bed-Stuy and Lefferts Gardens. Major nearby landmarks/instutions include Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Franklin Avenue and Nostrand Avenue are the major commercial areas with most of the shops and restaurants. We're on the border of Bed Stuy, so we also go to places in that neighborhood pretty often as well.

Where in your neighborhood can you go for a romantic dinner? Grab a quick bite? To Party?

We love going to Barboncino for dinner in our neighborhood, it has incredible wood-fired pizza. Guero's Tacos is great for a quick bite.

While there is no designated queer bar, when we want to go dancing in the area, we go to C'mon Everybody in nearby Bed-Stuy. They have a great monthly 80's/90's night called Everybody Everybody.

Any interesting museums or exhibits nearby?

We love checking out the latest exhibits at the THNK1994 Museum, which focus on pop culture phenomena ranging from Kim Cattrall's infamous scatting video to an upcoming exhibit based on Isaac Mizrahi calling the moon a planet on the QVC network.

Friend visiting out of town? Where would you bring him/her?

We love bringing out-of-town friends to Glady's, which is another great restaurant in our neighborhood, that has amazing Caribbean food and a really fun cocktail menu.

What do you dislike most about living here?

We don't strongly dislike anything, though sometimes the A train, the main train, is not the fastest mode of transportation into the city.
