Video taken by a recent visitor to Disneyland showed guests on the park’s famed Pirates of the Caribbean attraction were forced to abandon ship after one of the ride's boats started taking on water.
“It was a hot mess,” user Justin James wrote on TikTok (@justnjames). “Honestly thought we were gonna swim our way out of this.”
James posted video to TikTok of the incident, which took place on February 4 at Disney’s original theme park in Anaheim, California. The brief video has been viewed over 1.8 million times since it was posted.
During the ride, the bottom portion of James’s boat begins to take on several inches of water The boat itself, which actually runs on a track, was never in danger of fully submerging below the surface. The guests were stranded with their feet in the murky waters for an hour, though. The brief video ends by showing personnel from the Disneyland Fire Department safely rescuing the riders without injury or further incident.
Disney provided guests with a $30 voucher to purchase dry socks and Lightning Lane passes to avoid waiting in line for other attractions.
The popular ride in the New Orleans Square area of the park first opened in 1967 and has been a popular attraction ever since. Riders are taken on boats through a bayou, down a waterfall, and through a burning representation of New Orleans from a bygone era.
