Some establishments have lions or other fearsome beasts guarding their doorways. Honolulu’s hip new boutique hotel The Wyland Waikiki, on the other hand, is guarded by two playful-looking dolphins.

Around them and around the hotel’s enticing pool I spotted sculptures of frolicking otters, whales, and turtles, hints of the underwater theme that sets this luxurious hotel apart. It’s the first Robert Wyland-themed hotel and features the famed marine artist’s works throughout the hotel’s public spaces and 400 guestrooms.

It’s quite honestly one of the most refreshing hotels I’ve walked into. Crisp whites and soothing blues and greens feature in the lobby between chic alcoves that house the Lobby Lounge, Kimo Bean coffee bar, a library and a Chill Room with massage chairs.

Spada Restaurant is set to open any day now and there are freshwater and saltwater pools, as well as a spa and fitness center.
