My Fair Flemings

Story and images by Ed Salvato; above: the Flemings Hotel Mayfair, parts of which date from 1730

For gay visitors, there are many great lodging options throughout the city. On a recent visit, we explored the Mayfair section of London's West End -- convenient to shopping, theater, parks, and many attractions of interest to gay and lesbian visitors. Here's one of the hotels we discovered. We'll present more discoveries in a future update.

Located just north of Green Park, steps from the Green Park Tube stop, the Flemings Hotel Mayfair is a luxurious Stained2though laid-back property with 119 rooms, a bar, and a restaurant, with incredibly helpful, friendly service focused on the needs of their guests whom they pride themselves on knowing. The hotel was built in 1851, the same year as the Great Exposition organized by Prince Albert and opened by his wife Queen Victoria in the Crystal Palace in nearby Hyde Park, making it the second oldest continuously operated hotel in London. The picture to the right shows a lovely bit of original stained glass from the hotel depicting the Great Exposition (faintly at the bottom).

Some of the buildings that comprise the hotel date from 1730 but the entire hotel has been continuously updated. The hotel is run by an out gay general manager, who, along with his (almost without exception very good-looking) staff, is always ready to let his lesbian and gay guests know what bars, restaurants, shows, and events may be of interest to them the city. (A few of their staff are shown in the images below.) Many of their recommendations will be walkable since the hotel is located in London's gay-popular West End. A nice touch is the fresh-baked goodies delivered to the room (free of charge) for your enjoyment.

The hotel also offers free passes to a local fitness center popular with gay and lesbian locals though the passes do not work during the weekend. Considering it's a five-star property, the hotel offers competitive rates and is very popular with Americans. Gay Pride London is fast approaching with the incredibly fun Pride parade scheduled for July 3. In honor of this, we'll be featuring much more up-to-the-minute information on gay London on this site in the coming days!

This is Charlie.
