After so many recent high-seas calamities, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer of New York is proposing that the cruise ship industry voluntarily adopt a “bill of rights” for passengers, travel blog Skift reports. Shumer’s proposal, which invokes the February fire and power loss on the Carnival Triumph, as well as similar incidents on several other Carnival ships, includes giving passengers the right to disembark a docked ship if basic provisions can’t be provided and a full refund if a trip is canceled because of a mechanical problem, among other stipulations. In a statement, the Cruise Lines International Association said it “looks forward to reviewing” Shumer’s proposal.
