Discover why chic Costa Navarino is Europe's luxury getaway
A Warm Welcome to the Mediterranean
A glimpse of paradise: luxurious living at W Costa Navarino

In the sun-drenched Messenia region in the southwestern Peloponnese peninsula, Costa Navarino is Greece's best-kept secret, offering a luxurious and sustainably-driven escape that rivals the world's top destinations. While Greece is known for its LGBTQ+ welcoming culture, iconic islands like Mykonos and Santorini, and the bustling charm of Athens, Costa Navarino, an enclave of high-end resorts, is quietly redefining Mediterranean luxury.
Established in 2010, this off-the-beaten-path gem boasts over 300 sunny days a year, with temperatures averaging a comfortable 75°F (24°C) in spring and fall and climbing to 85°F (29°C) in summer. Visiting felt like discovering the European cousin of the Hamptons – effortlessly chic, refreshingly serene, and undeniably exclusive.
Costa Navarino is a paradise for sports enthusiasts, with a unique focus on active living. Home to an NBA Basketball School, 18 tennis courts, and an impressive four of Greece’s ten golf courses, the destination has firmly positioned itself as a premier sporting destination. Families can take advantage of engaging kids’ camps, freeing parents to perfect their swing on the golf courses or enjoy water sports like kayaking along the unspoiled coastline. The destination also features olive harvesting workshops, olive oil and wine tastings, and culinary experiences, blending leisure with culture. Among its collection of luxury accommodations, I opted for W Costa Navarino – a stylish, adults-focused resort that welcomes guests 12 and older, making it perfect for couples seeking a child-free escape as well as families beyond the toddler stage.
With its sophisticated vibe and no crying children in sight during my stay, it was the perfect retreat to immerse myself in the unmatched beauty and allure of this Mediterranean haven.
Greek society embraces filoxenia – a deep-rooted tradition of kindness toward strangers

Greece has long been celebrated for its warmth and hospitality, and in recent years, it has become an increasingly welcoming destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. In 2024, the country, the first Orthodox Christian-majority nation to do so, took a significant step forward by legalizing same-sex marriage, further solidifying its commitment to equality. While islands like Mykonos and Athens’ Gazi district have long been LGBTQ+ hotspots, inclusive spaces are expanding across the country, including in more relaxed destinations like Costa Navarino. Greek society embraces the concept of filoxenia – a deep-rooted tradition of kindness toward strangers – making visitors feel at ease.
Getting there

Summer 2025 will mark a milestone for travel to Greece, with more direct flights to Athens from the U.S., making it easier than ever to reach the country’s most stunning destinations.
Getting to Costa Navarino is seamless, with multiple flight options available from both the U.S. and Europe. While there are no direct flights from the U.S. to Kalamata International Airport (KLX), travelers can take advantage of the increased nonstop routes to Athens (ATH) and connect via a quick 45-minute flight on Aegean Airlines. From Kalamata, it’s just a 45-minute drive to Costa Navarino.
For European visitors, direct flights to Kalamata are available from major cities like London, Munich, Amsterdam, and Zurich, with seasonal routes expanding accessibility. Alternatively, those flying into Athens can opt for a scenic three-hour drive to Costa Navarino, which winds through the breathtaking Peloponnesian countryside. En route, you’ll pass the iconic Corinth Canal, the largest manufactured canal in Europe, slicing through limestone cliffs to connect the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Spanning four miles (6.4 kilometers), this 19th-century engineering marvel offers a striking introduction to the grandeur of Greece – an inspiring prelude to your Costa Navarino escape.
The Allure of W Costa Navarino

W Costa Navarino is more than just a resort – it’s an experience that feels both luxurious and deeply personal. Nestled along the unspoiled coastline of the Ionian Sea, this adults-only retreat (welcoming young adults 12 and older) is a sanctuary where modern elegance meets the soul of Greece. Spread across 13 hectares, the resort’s design is a love letter to the region, blending sleek, contemporary architecture with the timeless beauty of traditional Greek villages. Natural materials like stone and reed are woven throughout, creating a sense of harmony with the landscape that feels both authentic and refined.
From the moment you arrive, the attention to detail is striking. Whether you're staying in a chic bay view room, a spacious swim-up suite, or a private villa with its own infinity pool, the views are nothing short of spectacular – think endless stretches of turquoise sea with glistening sunsets and rugged coastline. What I love most is how the resort balances grandeur with intimacy. Even at its busiest, the open-air spaces and thoughtful layout make it feel like an ultra-exclusive escape.

The little touches truly set W Costa Navarino apart. Imagine returning to your room after dinner to find a twilight turndown service, complete with plush slippers by the bed, soft lighting, and a serene ambiance. Suite art installations by students from the Athens School of Fine Arts add a creative, local flair, while the resort’s commitment to sustainability is woven seamlessly into every aspect of your stay. It’s luxury with a conscience, and it feels good to indulge knowing you're supporting eco-conscious practices.
The dining options are a journey in themselves, with vibrant flavors and fresh, local ingredients that celebrate the region’s culinary heritage. Whether you’re unwinding at the Away Spa, exploring the wellness offerings, or simply savoring a quiet moment by the sea, the resort never feels overwhelming. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect, recharge, ground yourself, and connect with the beauty of Messenia.
A Culinary Escape: Dining Options at W Costa Navarino

Dining at W Costa Navarino is a celebration of flavor, creativity, and the rich culinary traditions of Greece. Being vegan, I appreciated how the restaurants here cater to a variety of dietary preferences, offering plant-based options that felt both thoughtful and satisfying.
The day starts at Platia, the resort’s vibrant culinary square, where breakfast feels like a feast. I loved wandering between the stations, discovering everything from freshly baked pastries to creamy overnight oats topped with seasonal fruits. The chickpea omelet and Mediterranean spreads stood out, particularly the creamy hummus, briny Kalamata olives, and sun-dried tomatoes. It's the kind of breakfast that makes you slow down and savor every bite.
For lunch, I found myself drawn to Wet Deck, where the laid-back beach club vibe pairs perfectly with light, flavorful bites. The options here were refreshing – think crisp salads bursting with local produce and creative small plates that felt both nourishing and indulgent. Sitting by the pool and the sea, with the sound of waves in the background, made every bite even more memorable.

As the sun sets, Parelia becomes the place to be. This beachfront restaurant takes Greek cuisine to new heights, and I was pleasantly surprised by their thoughtful plant-based dishes. The grilled vegetables with herb-infused olive oil and the hearty lentil stew were standouts, showcasing the freshness of local ingredients.
And then there’s Between Lounge, where the day winds down with inventive cocktails and panoramic sunset views. While thoroughly enjoying their creative cocktails, I noticed how well they cater to non-drinkers with their mocktails, too. With or without alcohol, it’s the perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day, surrounded by the warm glow of the evening.

The Away Spa at W Costa Navarino

At W’s Away Spa, relaxation takes on a whole new meaning. Nestled within the hotel, this boutique spa offers a serene retreat that caters to both body and mind. The spa menu is extensive, but the Sports Booster massage is a standout, which is tailored to athletes and active guests. This treatment focuses on deep tissue relief, perfect for recovering after a day of golfing or kayaking. Beyond the treatment rooms, the spa offers a range of wellness amenities, including a steam room, sauna, and a heated 25-meter lap pool that invites guests to unwind at their own pace. Fitness enthusiasts can start their mornings with a yoga or Pilates class in picturesque outdoor settings overlooking the sea. The gym extends the wellness experience with an indoor-outdoor layout, allowing guests to exercise while enjoying stunning views of the Ionian coastline. Away Spa embodies the resort’s holistic approach to wellness, ensuring that every guest leaves feeling refreshed, recharged, and ready to embrace all that Costa Navarino has to offer.
Kayaking in Navarino Bay is a must
Courtesy Costa Navarino
Right next to W Costa Navarino, Moraitis Watersports is a playground for anyone who loves being on the water, whether you're a total beginner or an experienced pro. With everything from windsurfing and waterskiing to kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, it’s got all the gear and guidance you need to dive in – literally or figuratively. I spent an afternoon kayaking along the coast, soaking in some of the most stunning views of the Ionian Sea while getting a solid workout. Along the way, I struck up conversations with other guests who were also out exploring, which made these experiences feel even more special. It’s one of those rare activities that’s both peaceful and energizing, and it quickly became a highlight of my stay.
Beyond the resort: A taste of Messenia’s culinary gems

Costa Navarino’s surrounding areas offer a culinary adventure for those wanting to explore beyond the resort. Just minutes away, in the Navarino Dunes area, Da Luigi delights diners with its authentic Italian menu served in a charming open-air square. The ambiance is magical, especially on clear nights when the stars illuminate the sky – a setting that feels straight out of a romantic film. Flame, located near the Dunes Course, offers spectacular golf course views and a meat-heavy menu. It's also a great spot to unwind after a round of golf. The resort’s complimentary shuttle service makes exploring these offsite dining options effortless.
And for the plant-based, Green Pepper, back in the Navarino Bay area, is a true gem, specializing in vegetarian and vegan dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. What makes it even more special is its location – while technically part of the W, it’s set a bit apart from the main resort, requiring a short walk or buggy ride to reach. This distance gives it a charming offsite vibe, almost like discovering a hidden local spot.
What’s nearby: Exploring Messinia
The town of Pylos
Courtesy Costa Navarino
The Messenia region around the W feels like stepping into a vintage postcard of Greece – untouched, authentic, and brimming with life. Just a short drive from the resort, the town of Pylos is a hidden gem that has managed to stay refreshingly off the beaten path. Wandering its cobblestone streets, you’re greeted by warm smiles from locals and a sense of timeless charm. It’s the kind of place cruise passengers would fall in love with – scenic, walkable, and steeped in history – yet because large ships don’t dock here, it retains an unspoiled, intimate allure that makes exploring it feel even more special. One of my favorite spots just outside the town is Neokastro Castle, a 16th-century Ottoman fortress that towers over Navarino Bay. Definitely worth visiting for a sunset!
For a taste of paradise, Voidokilia Beach is a must. Its iconic horseshoe shape, soft golden sand, and crystal-clear waters make it feel like something out of a dream. One could spend hours here sunbathing and swimming, but the real adventure is Nestor's Cave. This hike is worth every step – once you reach the top, the panoramic views of the coastline are nothing short of breathtaking.
Closer to the resort, the Navarino Agora is a lively hub of art, culture, and local flavor. Here, you can browse the boutique shops and sample regional delicacies at the delis, but the open-air cinema is the real highlight. Watching a film under the stars, surrounded by the buzz of the marketplace, is an experience you won't soon forget.
When to visit and major local events

While W Costa Navarino closes from late October to early April, the greater Costa Navarino region remains a year-round destination for homeowners. However, the ideal times to visit are April through June and September through October, when the weather is pleasantly mild, the crowds are smaller, and the landscape is at its most vibrant. These shoulder seasons are perfect for exploring Messenia’s natural beauty and enjoying outdoor activities without the scorching summer heat.
October also marks the return of the Navarino Challenge, a multi-sport annual event that celebrates fitness and sustainability. With over 55 activities, including trail runs, yoga sessions, and HIIT workouts, the event draws participants from around the world. The highlight is the Greek Half Marathon, which takes runners along the breathtaking coastline from Voidokilia Beach to Pylos.
