Panti's Christmas Address Beat Out The Queen's

Looks like Elizabeth has a new royal rival in the British Isles.

Since 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has delivered a Christmas message to her subjects almost every year. It's a time-honored tradition, a staple of the holiday for Brits and international viewers alike. This year, however, she had some competition in the Republic of Ireland. Panti, the self-proclaimed Queen of Ireland who rallied her nation to overwhelmingly support marriage equality earlier this year, delivered her own address, The Queen of Ireland's Christmas Message, which aired at the same time, on a different channel. Ireland was, therefore, given a choice between queens, between messages, and Panti came out on top.

The Independent reports that, while 43,000 people tuned in to watch the British Queen's message, 47,000 chose Panti's broadcast. Panti's ten-minute speech focused not only on the successful referendum, but on the next step along the path to a more just society.
