Can You Be Broadway's Next Spiderman?

Can you sing, climb buildings, and perform heterosexual kissing scenes? If so, you could be the next star of Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark.

The big-budget Broadway musical, once beset with accidents, bad reviews, and lawsuits, is now on track and making lots of money. But the latest news with the production is that its star, Reeve Carney, is departing in September. The show's female lead, Mary Jane, is also getting recast as Rebecca Faulkenberry is departing as well. Producers will hold two open casting calls: one in Los Angeles's Hollywood United Methodist Church on August 12 and another at New York's Stage 48 on August 19. Just make sure you're in your late teens or early 20s.

"Those auditioning should be prepared to sing a rock song a capella, showing off his/her range," producers said in a statement. "They should also have sheet music on hand for that song in the event that they are asked to sing with the piano accompanist.  Hopefuls are asked NOT to prepare any music from SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark.  Everyone should bring a photo or snapshot and a resume stapled together."

With music by Bono and The Edge and an original book co-written by Julie Taymor (The Lion King), the $75 million musical seemed destined for success two years ago. But injuries and bad buzz haunted the production — Taymor was initially directing the show, but was removed (she later sued). Regardless, the show is very popular with audiences and is on its way to recouping its initial production costs.  Tickets for the show, which plays at the Foxwoods Theater on 42nd Street, start at $49.
