A View Of Rubem Robierb's Striking Art

Miami-based artist Rubem Robierb's work challenges the viewer to reconcile desire and beauty with destruction and division.

?Miami-based artistRubem Robierb's most recent exhibit, Bullet Fly Effect, takes on new significance in post-Sandy Hook America. The merger beauty of the butterfly, inspiring artists for 3,500 years, merged with the machine gun, a universally understood symbol of man-made destruction, challenges the viewer to pick a side.

A similar challenge underlies Robierb's 2011 series "Show Me the Money," in which dollar bills (and higher currencies, too) are twisted into the things they buy, some large, some small, though many out of the average American's grasp. The iconic ears of Disney, a driving force in Florida's economy, are instantly recognizable.

And Robierb, currently celebrating his marriage to ABC News meteorologist Sam Champion, focused on the body for Spiritual Portrait, a 2008 series shot in Magic City. Here we offer an introduction to, images arresting and eclectic, like Miami itself.
