June is widely recognized as the official month for LGBT Pride. Why? Because the first gay Pride—known then as Christopher Street Liberation Day—took place in New York City on June 28, 1970, on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. That same weekend in 1970, similar—albeit smaller—marches took place in the major West Coast cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. And so an annual tradition was born.
