It's finally happening! Since last year we have shared about the upcoming Trixie Mattel renovation show Trixie Motel, and even put the RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars winner on the cover of our Spring issue.
In our exclusive interview, Mattel told us, "“There has never, ever, ever been a motel like this, and there has never been a renovation show like this. It is going to leave people’s jaws on the floor,” Mattel promises. “The property is so beautiful, and we have created something that truly feels like the heart of it — even though it’s an artificial heart…like it’s a pig heart installed after your grandpa’s heart attack.”
Although she wasn't able to spill much about the show or the hotel, she did explaine, “I wanted to put this motel in drag. Each room feels like a different day in my closet.” The “closest” comparison to Trixie Motel would be A Very Brady Renovation, she surmises, referring to the HGTV show documenting the makeover of The Brady Bunch home.
Here's the show's tentalizing trailer:
Mattel has blossomed into far more than a simple drag queen, launching Trixie Cosmetics, blogging (the GOOPED newsletter with Katya via Substrack), writing the New York Times bestseller Trixie and Katya’s Guide to Modern Womanhood, podcasting (The Bald and The Beautiful ), and Billboard chart-topping singer/songwriter dropping a douple LP, The Blonde and Pink Albums later this month.
Now everyone has the opportunity to see the show -- and the renovation of a Palm Springs hotel for themselves, as it streams on Discovery+ starting June 3rd.
The eight-episode series will follow Trixie, her partner and property co-owner, David Silver, and and a team of workers as they tackle the massive overhaul of a ramshackle mid-century motel in Palm Springs, California. After spending nearly two million dollars to buy it, the show follows Mattel as she tours the dilapidated property for the first time.
"When I first walked into the dark and dingy motel, I was disgusted, horrified and I just wanted to take a match to the place,” she said in a recent press release. “But then I thought about how a little paint and glitter can turn a 32-year-old bald man from Wisconsin into a Hollywood darling, and I knew with our talented team and some strategic reconstructive surgery, we could turn this dump into a dazzler!”
Trixie and David will recruit a slew of spectacular helpers to complete the project in time to kick off Pride Month with a grand opening extravaganza. To help out with the epic undertaking, Trixie secures “free labor” from friends, including hospitality mogul Lisa Vanderpump, comedian Nicole Byer, actor and musician Zooey Deschanel, Property Brother Jonathan Scott, and drag queen/partner in crime Katya. More famous friends lend a hand during the season, including award-winning actor Leslie Jordan, musician and model Iggy Azalea, actor and television host Jonathan Bennett, and musician Belinda Carlisle.
These guests will help transform the rundown place into a very Trixie Mattel motel featuring seven uniquely themed rooms, a spectacular pool area, lobby and bar that will inspire guests to feel their Palm Springs fantasy.
Interior designer Dani Dazey, signed on to bring her maximalist, elevated kitschy style to each space, and throughout the season, more of Mattel's friends will pop in to participate including: social media star and comedian Brittany Broski; actor and model Gigi Gorgeous; actor Emily Hampshire; and recording artist Orville Peck. Social media superstars The Old Gays; Nic Scheppard and Jenson Titus of Very Gay Paint; and drag queens Mo Heart, Jaida Essence Hall, and Juno Birch. With even more legendary guests arriving for the grand opening party, the season will introduce a hot new location to experience everything Palm Springs has to offer.
