In the wake of the Orlando shooting, the car service is offering free rides to select locations of LGBT importance in 40 cities.
After last weekend’s shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, it might seem difficult to celebrate Pride. However, Uber wants to make it easier for us to get to our community during this trying time.
The app-based car service is providing free rides to select LGBT centers, clinics, bars, and clubs in 40 cities through Monday. Each rider in these cities is eligible for two $20 rides that start or end at one of the select LGBT destinations. Local teams in New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and the other cities included were tasked with choosing locations of importance to the LGBT community.
Although Orlando is not one of the cities included in the promotion, Uber is offering free rides within the city to family members of the victims.
This is just a recent gesture in Uber’s commitment to the LGBT community. In 2014, they offered free weddings to eight San Francisco couples after the Supreme Court effectively struck down California’s Prop 8. Last year, following SCOTUS’s marriage equality ruling, they updated the app to include rainbow trails behind the car icons on its GPS.
