The Gay Games earlier today announced new 2023 dates for this year’s postponed Gay Games which had been scheduled to take place this month in Hong Kong. The rescheduled Gay Games will now take place November 3-11, 2023, and will remain Hong Kong, the first time the Gay Games have been hosted by an Asian country. Organizers also announced they have officially changed the name for these Games to Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2023.
Lisa Lam, co-chair of GGHK, said in a statement, “Inclusion, solidarity, spirit, and resilience. These four words are the bedrock of identity for the Gay Games, which is gearing up for its 2023 edition in Hong Kong, In what will be the first ever Gay Games held in Asia, the event will arrive at a time when these four words hold more value than ever before.”
“We are thrilled today for the opportunity to share our latest plans for the Gay Games,” Dennis Philipse, founder and co-chair of GCHK, said in a statement. “Now that we have one more year to prepare, we continue working together with the Federation of Gay Games and participating organizations around the world to ensure this event, the first of its kind in Asia, will live up to its true potential as a beacon of hope, inspiration, and compassion.”
The Gay Games will feature 36 sports events like track and field, aquatics, ball and racquet sports, and even dodgeball. A special Festival Village will be open to the public as well, along with an extensive calendar of cultural and artistic events.
The organizers have previously acknowledged that they've run into some problems reserving venues for the events, and there has been some anti-gay rhetoric from conservative Hong Kong politicians around the Games themselves.
Gay Games 11 Hong Kong 2023 are open to all adults over the age of 18 regardless of sexual orientation, gender, race, nationality, or abilities.
