One of my favorite types of vacations is the combination of luxury and wilderness. You're outside all day, hiking, climbing, exploring, getting dirty. But come evening you're pampered, spoiled with service, and well fed. If you can experience this combination in a destination that's also exotic, well, all the better.
The brand new -- futuristic-looking -- Safire Hotel in Freycinet on the island-state of Tasmania off the southern coast of Australia, serves all this up and more. Set down like a sleek alien space craft hugging the scruffy Tassy terrain, the Safire's main lodge and 20 luxury suites spread out along the hillside, each glass-enclosed or open vantage point offering up stunning views stretching far across both water and land.
Visitors are blissfully isolated away from the cares and exigencies of 'civilization,' while surrounded by the utmost luxury, including state-of-the-art spa and gym. Lounge and loll in your private suite or enjoy one of the many nature-oriented activities organized by the hotel ranging from one to three hours. Tasmania is home to some of the most fascinatingly odd animals on the planet, including a huge range of marsupials. Be sure to participate in a nocturnal safari (they mostly come out at night).
