Caribbean Island Saba Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

Caribbean Island Saba Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

For a less obvious alternative to St. Barthélemy in the Caribbean, Jimmy Im wrote earlier this year, many guys are choosing Saba, on the other side of St. Maarten.

For a less obvious alternative to St. Barthélemy in the Caribbean, Jimmy Im wrote earlier this year, many guys are choosing Saba, on the other side of St. Maarten, which is just as tolerant "without the bling (and half the price)" and is accessible "via a short ferry ride or a heart-wrenching 10-minute puddle jump (the runway is built into the cliffs)."

Now there's the news that Saba has legalized same-sex marriage, becoming the first Dutch Caribbean territory allowing marriage equality. Part of the former Netherland
Antilles, Saba registered its first same-sex marriage on December 4, and the next marriage was scheduled to take place on December 17, 2012.

Thinking this might be the perfect place to celebrate (or renew) your vows?  Well we are told that Queen’s Garden
Resort
, a luxury boutique hotel with 12 suites has proudly welcomed same-sex couples for honeymoons and romantic getaways for
years, and they support the cause. “Saba is a beautifully rich island culturally, and we pride ourselves on being very progressive and open to everyone,” said Queen’s Gardens’ owners, Hidde and Claire Verbeke. “Saba
is the perfect destination for anyone’s wedding or honeymoon with our world-famous scuba diving and sweeping mountain-top views from our
resort suites. Everyone
should have a chance to experience this paradise!”
