Miami and Miami Beach will host the World Outgames in 2017, the president of the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association announced on Thursday in Antwerp, Belgium, the site of the 2014 games. This will be the first time the international sporting event will be held in the United States.
“We are extremely honored that GLISA chose Miami Beach-Miami for the 2017 World Outgames; this is a major leap forward for our community,” said Bruce Townsend, co-chair of the Miami-Beach-Miami Sports Cultural League, which made the bid for the games. “This experience has been unbelievable for our team and we are grateful to represent Miami Beach and Miami for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The World Outgames got its start in 2006, when the Federation for Gay Games determined that Montreal wasn’t prepared to host the official Gay Games, as planned, and moved the event to Chicago. Montreal organizers instead planned their own event, which became the World Outgames.
