Plaque Ceremony for Stonewall Inn Abruptly Canceled

A private group pulled the plug on a plaque ceremony that would have commemorated the site of the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City.

The Historic Landmarks Preservation Group, a private group headed up by a powerful Democratic donor, was leading the plaque effort, with a ceremony planned for Tuesday at the Greenwich Village watering hole. But the event was abruptly canceled, amidst reports that none of the original LGBT participants in the Stonewall uprising were invited to speak at the event or made part of the planning process.

"I hope we can get the process rebooted with community participation and with the veterans themselves," State Senator Brad Holyman told Gay City News.
