Subhi Nahas Among Grand Marshals for NYC Pride
The Out100 honoree will be joined by Jazz Jennings and Cecilia Chung.
Out100 honoree, Subhi Nahas is among three Grand Marshals chosen for this year’s NYC Pride. A Syrian refugee, he addressed the U.N. Security Council in 2015 about the struggles of the LGBT community in his home country. He co-founded the first LGBT magazine in Syria, Mawaleh.
Other Grand Marshals include 15-year-old trans activist, author, and YouTube star, Jazz Jennings and HIV/AIDS activist, Cecilia Chung. Jennings is known for her TLC docuseries, I Am Jazz, as well as cofounding the Transkids Purple Rainbow Foundation. Chung is a founding producer of the San Francisco Trans March, a member of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, and a senior strategist for the Transgender Law Center.
NYC Pride March Director Julian Sanjivan released a statement:
“Our 2016 theme, ‘Equality Needs You,’ could not be better reflected than through Jazz, Subhi, and Cecilia. In a post-marriage equality America, these leaders are ensuring that the barriers to LGBT people achieving true legal, health, and social equality are being broken down.”
This year’s 47th NYC Pride March begins at noon on June 26th. It will go from 36th St in Manhattan down 5th Ave to Greenwich St and Christopher St.
