Through May 14, guests staying at The Breakwater Hotel or Cape Colony Inn in Provincetown, Mass., or Truro Beach Cottages on the Cape will receive complimentary off-the-beaten-path tours led by local scientists, actors, and writers.
Provincetown has long been a refuge for LGBTQ+ artists, writers, and tourists. But even if you've been there before, these tours will offer you the chance to learn something new about the town and the beautiful landscape where dunes meet water.
Guests of the three properties may choose from four free tour choices: An introduction to the Outer Cape plants, animals, and beach creatures led by Dennis Minsky, a local biologist, educator, naturalist, expert birder, and writer; a exploration of Cape Cod pirate lairs and lore led by actor, director, and writer Sam Wood; a historical tour of Cold War Cape Cod led by geographer Brendan Felix; and a guided tour of the Cape's dunes, ponds, and woodlands, by award-winning journalist Ann Wood.
The program is organized by Wood, a longtime Provincetown resident and director of Outer Cape Tours & Concierge Services. “Eco-adventures are the perfect way to get fresh air, exercise, stay safe, learn interesting stories, and see the hidden beauty of the Outer Cape up close,” says Wood.
The company offers tours open to the general public but these have been specifically designed for the guests of the participating properties, who will have the opportunity to “trek through forests, by ponds and along the beach as they hear fascinating stories about the history or ecology of the Outer Cape. The whole family is welcome on most adventures, including leashed dogs.”
If a walking tour (or hiking tour as some of the trips cover miles of rugged terrain) isn’t your thing, Wood will instead direct you to the perfect performance, gallery show, fishing expedition, or mountain bike trails.
Cape Colony Inn, just outside Provincetown’s main commercial district, features a heated pool and an amenity-rich experience at a competitive price. (Through May 27, the hotel is offering special savings when you book direct: with weekday rates as low as $69/night and weekend (Fri/Sat) rates $99/night. Use code: EARLY2021).
Breakwater Hotel overlooks Cape Cod Bay, Provincetown Harbor, and Long Point Light Station. Its an easy walk to the ocean and downtown.
The waterfront Truro Beach Cottages -- once treasured by fishermen, now enjoyed by vacationers -- offer a tranquile retreat near Cape beaches, where you'll be lulled by salty air, and the sounds of Cape Cod Bay.
