At a garden party outside Oslo's Royal Palace this week, King Harald V of Norway impassioned speech about the importance of unity and understanding within and outside of the country's borders. The address comes after a recent shift in Norwegian political power toward the center-right, resulting in anti-immigration language creeping into the national conversation.
"It's not always easy to say where we come from, to which nationality we belong," he began. "Home is where the heart is."
"Norwegians are girls who love girls, boys who love boys, and boys and girls who love each other," Harald V continued. "Norwegians believe in God, Allah, everything and nothing. In other words: You are Norway, we are Norway."
He concluded by saying: "My biggest hope for Norway is that we will manage to take care of each other. That we can further build this country on trust, solidarity, and generosity."
