CHRISTIANIA

A "freetown" since squatters took over military land in 1971, this 85-acre commune is totally unique in Copenhagen -- and possibly the world -- and not entirely under the jurisdiction of the city. Pot was even openly sold till 2004. "People are more creative here and more free, in a good way. You just have to experience it. Walk away from all the busy parts towards the woods and discover exciting hand-built architecture and small shops with homemade design stuff. Especially in the summer, near the lake, it's absolutely beautiful."
