Spain-based Room Mate Hotels have expanded to the U.S. with properties in Miami Beach and New York, offering inexpensive rates all year round and discounts for early reservations. The hotels are designed specifically for travelers on the go; each one is originally decorated without unnecessary frills.

For $150 a night you can enjoy an in-city getaway at the New York location, Room Mate Grace, located in the heart of Times Square and within walking distance of Bryant Park and Rockefeller Center. Room Mate Grace has an indoor pool where DJs spin poolside five days a week, sauna, and steam room. Continental breakfast is included. In addition, a free, new weekly gay pool party, "Drip," was launched at the hotel in February. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. -- all you need to attend is a bathing suit.

If you prefer the tempered style of Europe, the Room Mate Hotels in Granada, Spain -- the Migueletes, Leo, and Shalma -- are offering 20 percent off through March.

Money-saving tip: When traveling through Europe by train, buy a rail pass; they cover a multitude of trip lengths and range from single country to multiple-country options.
