Fall for Tempe
Story and photos by Aefa Mulholland.
It’s still sticky hot summer in Toronto, but I’m starting to think of fall destinations and, as usual, the first direction I think of fleeing is southwest. Arizona, with its famous "dry heat," is always my favorite fall escape and vibrant, charming college town Tempe, in the heart of Metro Phoenix is a great base for exploring.
I love checking into the dramatic Buttes Resort - literally built onto the dusty red buttes - or the stately, central Tempe Mission Palms and heading out into the surrounding Sonoran Desert to hike the rugged Suspicion Mountains, stopping to tuck into prickly pear ice cream at Tortilla Flat (population 6), or catching a Broadway show at Frank Lloyd Wright-designed ASU Gammage (watch out for Legally Blonde, Annie, Phantom of the Opera, and Little House on the Prairie this season), maybe sauntering among the cacti in gorgeous Desert Botanic Gardens in Papago Park, zipping round cool, 220-acre Tempe Town Lake on a Segway tour or simply strolling bustling Mill Avenue, shopping, eating, and downing a pint of local Kilt Lifter Ale.
