It was 1984 when New York drag icon Lady Bunny put on the first Wigstock in Tompkins Square Park. The drag festival ran for 20 years, showcasing some of the best drag queens and queer talent of our time.
After taking a break for a few years, Wigstock came back last year to set sail on the Hudson. The first cruise quickly sold out, immediately reviving the drag magic that is Wigstock. This year, they’re gonna need bigger boat.
“I don’t normally perform in boats,” Lady Bunny told us. “Except for that time I borrowed Latrice Royale’s shoes.”
It shouldn’t be an issued for Ms. Bunny. This year, she’s accompanied by some amazing talent. Co-hosting with Linda Simpson, they’ll present performances from Connie Fleming, Jimmy James, Ebony Jett, Glamamore, Juanita More, Tabboo!, Michael West, Dueling Bankheads, and John Kelly as Joni Mitchell. It’s a drag reunion of sorts as some of these queens have not performed in years.
Bunny told us what to expect of this year’s cruise:
“You might want want to wear a somewhat sensible shoe. Not only because the boat gets to rocking sometimes, but because the decent music is refreshing! Remember dancing? Floor fillers from the 90s and beyond with some disco or whatever thrown in. Of course people love the show, but just having great music, vibes and people all dolled up on board also makes this a real party. I hope you'll join us as we're getting wiggy with it!”
Wigstock: The Cruise starring Lady Bunny takes place Sunday, August 21 at Pier 40 on NYC’s West Side Hwy. Boarding begins at 6pm, sailing from 7:30 to 10pm. $40 advance, $50 at the pier, buffet dinner included. Tickets are now available online.
