Conservative British MP Defends Popper Use in Parliamentary Debate

In a crackdown on recreational drug use, the British government has proposed banning poppers.

Who would have thought that, in the space of a single week, the ancient and esteemed institution of the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland would discuss both Donald Trump and poppers. Earlier this week, a three hour debate was held on the topic of banning the Republican presidential candidate from entering the UK on the grounds of hate speech and, yesterday, a high-ranking Conservative (Tory) Member of Parliament (MP), Crispin Blunt, talked about his very personal views on the proposed ban of alkyl nitrites (poppers), the legally obtainable substance most famously used by gay men before and during sex.

Speaking in parliament yesterday, Blunt got straight to the point:

“There are some times, Madam Deputy Speaker, when something is proposed which becomes personal to you and you realize that the government is about to do something fantastically stupid and I think in those circumstances one has a duty to speak up.”

“I use poppers. I out myself as a poppers user. And would be directly affected by this legislation. And I was astonished to find that it’s proposed they be banned and, frankly, so were very many gay men.”

He added that he has been using poppers for decades and that, contrary to claims of potential harms, it has been proven to benefit the health and relationships of men who have sex with men. Additionally, he reiterated warnings from gay health groups that banning the substance would likely result in a rise of hard drug use and spread of sexually transmitted disease.
