And the Best New Restaurants in the Country Are....

California restaurants dominate Bon Appetit's 2013 list.

Bon Appetit just released its list of the 10 best new restaurants in America, with Los Angeles and San Francisco eateries taking the top spots, respectively.

The influential food publication says Alma, a restaurant in Los Angeles's gentrifying downtown district, is the best of the best. Alma is located on the south end of Broadway, not far from an under-construction Ace Hotel that will occupy a former movie house/historic tower. Alma, from chef Ari Taymor, serves "seasonal, chef-driven cuisine with natural, biodynamic wines, beers and ciders," according to its website. Menu items include oyster stew, lavender roasted duck with corn, miso, chanterelle, and blackberry, and chocolate and frozen menthol. There's also a tasting menu and discounts on Tuesdays. The restaurant just received its liquor license, but offers a $30 corking fee if you want to bring your own bottle.

Number two on the list is San Francisco's Saison. Bon Appetit says dinner at Joshua Skenes's Michelin-starred restaurant can cost $1,000 for two people (!), with prix-fixe dinners in the $300 range — without drinks, tax, or tip. Located in the SOMA neighborhood, near AT&T park, Saison's serves upscale seafood (e.g. cured sea urchin) from an open kitchen. Sounds wonderful, if you can afford it.

Bon Appetit's other restaurants include hotspots from Nashville to Portland, Ore. See the full list here and a video below.
