January/February 2006 | Palermo, Sicily

Forrest Wright of Solana Beach, Calif., happened upon this church at the end of a two-week road trip through Sicily with his partner. “Much of Palermo has a faded, gilded beauty, and here, amidst all of that, were these bright red domes,” he says. “It’s a church built on top of a monastery that was constructed in 581.” But beyond Palermo’s layered architecture, Wright was drawn to the liveliness of the city’s inhabitants. “The most simple transaction, over the tailoring of a shirt or the purchase of seafood, can lead to longwinded digressions and strong opinions,” he recalls.
