With New York City awash in Pride events, seeing Priscilla Queen of the Desert has been on the top of our list. The show is also a key sponsor of NYC Pride 2011 and part of the “It Gets Better” campaign, of which the Grand Marshals Dan Savage and Terry Miller founded.
But before heading over to watch the Queens on Broadway (instead of just the queens in the street) we were a bit skeptical -– was the show going to be a pale imitation of the early '90s classic that impressed us on the silver screen all those years ago? Or was it going to wow us with something unique?
If you don’t remember what we’re talking about (for shame) the ever-popular Aussie movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert follows three drag queens who christen a bus Priscilla, drive her through the Aussie Outback to the center of the continent to perform a cabaret show in a dusty backwater town -- and of course find themselves in the process. The movie made you laugh, cry, dance and sing-a-long, so as we went into the theater we were hoping for the same effect. And that's exactly what we got.
The boys are hot. The jokes are great. The costumes are phenomenal. You'll cheer from your seat. It may also be one of the largest and most splendid drag shows you'll ever see. And with New York City’s Pride theme this year being “Proud and Powerful”, Priscilla just about sums that up. One of the biggest, brightest, glitziest, glamorous, fun, fabulous and magnificent nights to be had while in the City, it's a Broadway show not to be missed.
